Grand Inspired Artist Demonstrations
This year’s artist demonstrations feature the scroll saw! The scroll saw is a precision cutting tool used by artists and woodworkers to create intricate, detailed designs. Its fine, reciprocating blade allows for tight curves, delicate interior cuts, and elaborate patterns. Artists use the scroll saw to craft decorative wall art, fretwork, layered scenes, and even sculptural pieces—blending technical skill with creative expression.

Stoughton native, Mike Andersen, will be demonstrating the art of intarsia. Intarsia is a technique that creates intricate designs by cutting and then assembling pieces of different species of wood onto a base to create a solid three-dimensional form.

Traditionally trained as a woodworker and botanist, Brian is currently exploring painting, drawing and screen printing. He brings his deep knowledge of botany to his two-dimensional work, often drawing flowers, shrubs and trees in abstract and beautiful forms. |

Ben Fleischman
Ben creates striking abstract compositions using a tape-resist process to juxtapose bold colors against one another over progressive passes. The gestural rhythm of his work is a result of the physical movement of his arm and brush accompanied by the melodic verbalization of words and sounds that fuel his process.

Sarah Sobol
During study hall to deal with boredom and stress, I started to scribble on paper with my ballpoint pen. From then on, I’ve been doing my own kinds of art. Line built upon line, patterns emerge. It’s my own art form – nobody tells me what to do or how to do it. It’s fun, relaxing and even therapeutic.

I love the patterns and colors I see in the world and I put them in my art. People sometimes ask me what my art tries to express and my answer is simple: When I draw pigs it means I like to draw pigs. When I draw cats it means I like to draw cats.
Art is about making what you like.

Often working in layers of acrylic paint and paint marker, Hougan’s mark-making is both intentional and fluid, creating whimsical, bold compositions radiating with vibrant energy.
“I want to tell everyone who dreams about being a painter there are a lot of ways to make truly passionate art. I, as a person with autism, use art to express my feelings and locked up emotions. I love color and pattern. It helps my spinning world stand still.”
